Vaal Triangle – Thirty Early Childhood Development (ECD) principals from across the Vaal have successfully completed an intensive five-day Governance Training Programme aimed at strengthening leadership, financial management, compliance and the long-term sustainability of ECD centres.
The programme, sponsored by Clariant, provided principals with practical knowledge and management tools to help them build stronger, legally compliant and financially sustainable organisations that will ultimately benefit hundreds of young children in their care.

According to the post-training evaluation, the programme made a significant impact on participants, with many describing it as “eye-opening”, “empowering” and “life-changing.”
Financial management emerged as the most valuable topic. Principals reported gaining confidence in budgeting, cash flow management, bookkeeping, financial accountability and proper record keeping. Many acknowledged that they now understand the importance of separating personal and organisational finances and maintaining disciplined financial systems to ensure the sustainability of their ECD centres.
Participants also indicated that the training strengthened their understanding of governance and legal compliance, including board responsibilities, policy development, SARS requirements and regulatory obligations. Many expressed confidence that they are now better equipped to operate their centres according to good governance principles.
Another major highlight was the focus on strategic planning. Principals learned how to develop business plans, strategic plans, vision and mission statements, succession plans and long-term growth strategies. The programme encouraged participants to move beyond daily operational challenges and begin planning for the future of their organisations.
Leadership development also featured prominently throughout the programme. Through practical self-assessments and SWOT analysis, many principals recognised how personal growth influences organisational success, describing the experience as a turning point in their leadership journey.
The evaluation further revealed exceptionally high levels of participant satisfaction, with an estimated 98% satisfaction rate, knowledge gains of between 95% and 100%, and an overall qualitative return on investment estimated at between 92% and 96%. Participants also expressed a strong commitment to implementing the systems, policies and financial practices introduced during the training.
The practical nature of the programme received widespread praise, with principals highlighting the value of the templates, governance documents and management tools that can be implemented immediately within their ECD centres.
